Surgical interventions necessitated for clinical obesity are growing in number rapidly to match not only the rapid increase in the incidence of obesity but also its increasing acceptance by patients, clinicians and third party payers as a disease, removing much of the stigma that limited intervention. At right are shown actual bariatric surgical device unit sales through 2007 (highlighted), with projections through 2015, for the U.S. and Canada (we separately report Europe [by country], and the rest of the world in report #S825, Obesity). These figures include sales of devices such as [tag]gastric band[/tag]s, gastric stimulation devices, brain stimulation devices and other non-pharmaceutical devices available only through a physician.
We have seen, and accounted for, other forecasts that are dramatically more and less aggressive than the growth rate shown in this figure. If anything, the forecast is conservative, given the historical patterns we have seen in analogous early stage device markets. There are, as well, many variables with uncertain future impact that necessarily change the relative balance across different interventions encompassing device, drugs, behavioral modification and others.
The worldwide market for products in the clinical management of [tag]obesity[/tag] is covered in the MedMarket Diligence report #S825. Detailed description and table of contents here.
