The implantation of a coronary stent proceeds first with a guidewire (inserted at the femoral artery) advanced through the lumen of an artery clogged with atherosclerotic plaque. An angioplasty balloon is then advanced over the guideware to the site of the plaque, where it is then inflated to expand radially outward, compressing the plaque against the lumen wall. The balloon is retracted from the guidewire and the coronary stent is then advanced over a delivery device (another balloon) to the site. The balloon is then inflated, increasing the stent internal diameter until it compresses and is then held in place against the lumen. The balloon and guidewire are then removed, leaving the stent in place.
Below is a video (from J&J) showing the basic procedure to implant a stent.
