Venture Capital Financing of Medtech for January 2010 Crosses $500 million

In a distinctly upward trend, total venture capital financings in medical technology for the month of January 2010 hit $514 million. This eclipses the high month total of $440 in July 2009.
Key financings for the month include:

Investment in medtech off to a hot start in January

With medtech investment in January 2010 already clocked at $180 million in five days, the month and year are off to a quick start.   The financing amounts are also bigger, with over 70% of the financing rounds thus far in excess of $20 million each.  The financings include:

December 2009 medtech financings bring year-to-date total to $3.3 billion

Below are the medical technology industry financings through December 2009 (we'll update them through 12/31). There were a significant number of financings this month, but many small ones, the exceptions being Ophthotech ($30 million) and Asmathix ($27 million), for a December total of $153 million.
